On his television program, “The 700 Club, Mr. Robertson took a call from a man asking how he should advise a friend whose wife was deep into dementia and no longer recognized him.

“His wife as he knows her is gone,” the caller said, and the friend is “bitter at God for allowing his wife to be in that condition, and now he’s started seeing another woman.”

“This is a terribly hard thing,” Mr. Robertson said, clearly struggling to think his way through a wrenching situation. “I hate Alzheimer’s. It is one of the most awful things, because here’s the loved one — this is the woman or man that you have loved for 20, 30, 40 years, and suddenly that person is gone.”

If your ex is homosexual, this may influence your divorce. A court certainly cannot discriminate against your ex based on sexual preference, but the irregular state laws may complicate your child custody agreement.

The custody agreement is largely dependent on where you are getting divorced. Some states do not permit judges to consider sexual orientation when determining custody unless there is evidence that the spouse could bring harm to the child. For non-recognition states, however, judges will determine custody based on what is said to be best for the children. The definition of what is best for them is really according to the individual judge, which may be influenced by their personal beliefs on sexual orientation. Having a homosexual parent can be an additional shock for the child. A judge may therefore feel that this may make the homosexual parent less suitable for raising the child.

You do not need to worry as much if you live in New York, however. New York State treats heterosexual and homosexual relationships equally when it comes to child custody. A homosexual parent will be considered in the same way for child custody.

Victims of domestic violence often don’t know they’re being subjected to abuse until it seems too late to escape. Statistics show violence is the reason stated for divorce in 22% of middle-class marriages and worldwide studies prove that divorces involved in domestic violence are dwindling. This drop can be linked to the availability of divorce resources in a modern age such as the list assembled below. However, it is not enough and these sites are determined to narrow down the number of domestic violence cases to zero.

I compiled the following list of the Top 5 Domestic Violence sites to help you get the help you need for yourself or a loved one:

1. The National Domestic Violence Hotline – The Hotline provides 24-hour support for everyone affected by domestic violence and as the only one in the nation with access to more than 4,000 shelters and domestic violence programs across the United States, help is a sure thing.

2. Abuse Sanctuary - This site understands abuse isn’t just a physical thing but also an emotional and psychological trauma. They say knowledge is the greatest power; well, with daily updates on the psychology of abuse, this asylum is sure to empower you.

3. New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence - As the only statewide domestic violence coalition in New York, it is the driving catalyst in the development of hundreds of programs throughout the state for abused women and children.

4. Safe Horizon - The mission of the nation’s leading victim assistance organization is to move “victims of violence from crisis to confidence” and with their 57 programs located throughout the five boroughs of New York City, any client can be rest assured they would be soon looking over the horizon.

5. Edwin Gould Services for Children and Families - Founded in 1927, Edwin Gould defined the company’s mission as “…to reach directly the needy children of the present generation and contribute to their health, physical and educational development until they can be returned to a proper home environment or can be self-supporting…” Almost 85 years later, they’re still producing success stories.

Marriage statistics, though revealing some changes over the years, have consistently shown since the 1950s that most couples split after about seven years, according to Boston.com. We know that today couples are marrying at older ages and dealing with different financial worries and divorce laws. So why has this statistic remained? What makes the seventh year different?

A professor of sociology and public policy at Johns Hopkins University, Andrew J. Cherlin, explains that seven years marks a crucial point in the relationship between spouses. By seven years, a couple has a sense of how they work together, how they sort out problems and whether or not those problems can be fixed. Cherlin stated, “Over time, people’s flaws reveal themselves. The positives remain, but the negatives build up. It may be that after a while you realize your spouse won’t be providing for you economically as well as you want.”

Additionally, while a couple may see reason to split before reaching the seventh year, they may not be emotionally or financially ready to make the decision. Raising kids or trying to move up in the workplace may encourage couples to stay together.

According to the New York State Department of Health, New York couples also followed this trend. In 2009, more marriages lasted between 5-9 years in both New York City (8,057 divorces) and the state in total (14,700) than any other duration. While New York has seen a recent increase in the divorce rate by 12% due to the enactment of no-fault divorce, it is still unclear as to how this has affected the median age of marriages.

She recently explained to Marie Claire the reason for their elopement and eventual split: “Our deal from the beginning was, ‘We’re crazy to do this, but we’re doing it because we’re in love and it makes us happy.
After New York legalized gay marriage last week, many wondered when the first gay divorce would take place. Experts have predicted such divorces in New York to commence in a mere five years. However, Argentina is about to have its first gay divorce to a “female couple that have only been married since April 20th.”

Argentina became the first Latin America nation to pass the “groundbreaking law legalizing homosexual marriage” less than a year ago. Does this mean the New York experts who predicted same sex divorce cases to start in five to seven years are mistaken? Possibly. After all, who’s to calculate when the happiness of a married couple will come to a halt?
