“If I hadn’t gotten divorced, I never would have had the top five sexual experiences of my life,” gushed Tom, a friend of a friend at a recent holiday party.

What a turnaround! In 2010, at the same party, Tom* had been in the midst of splitting up with his wife of 12 years and I was offering him the names of marriage counselors. Now he was bankrupt and only saw his kids every other week, but he was exuberant about the change to his sex life.

“I’d given up on sex and fooled myself into thinking that I wasn’t even a particularly sexual person,” he explained. “I didn’t want to be the sort of guy who cheated, so I resigned myself to lackluster sex every other week… if I was lucky. We were so young and inexperienced when we got married. Now, for the first time in my life, I feel like I’m approaching sex as a confident adult.”

Does sex get better after divorce? Unfortunately, there haven’t been any formal studies that explore levels of post-divorce sexual satisfaction, but intrigued by Tom’s exuberance, I spoke with a handful of recently divorced friends, colleagues, and former patients. To my surprise, I found that many echo Tom’s enthusiasm.

The Washington City Council is on track to make it easier for same-sex couples who got married in the District of Columbia to get divorced.

D.C. Councilman Phil Mendelson proposed the legislation after hearing reports that same-sex couples who wed in the District were being denied divorces after moving to jurisdictions that don’t recognize same-sex marriages. The District of Columbia began allowing same-sex marriages in 2010. But those marriages are recognized in only a handful of places, meaning divorce proceedings can’t be started in many places that haven’t recognized the marriages in the first place.

“I received a number of reports from couples or attorneys about this impossible situation,” Mendelson told the Washington Examiner.

Mendelson’s bill removes a six-month waiting period during which someone seeking a divorce must reside in the District, provided the marriage occurred in the District in the first place.

CNN has recently reported on dealing with divorce during the holidays. Check out some of their tips.

(CNN) – David Murphy hasn’t started shopping for his two boys yet, and he knows he had better get started. The divorced father of two boys, ages 11 and 14, has custody for a full week around Christmas Day this year and needs to get a tree and start buying presents.

Every other year, Murphy (who didn’t want his real name used to protect his children’s privacy) doesn’t have Christmas custody. So, he tries to do something completely different. Divorced for four years, he has traveled with his mother to visit England, where she was born. He has joined his father and stepmother on a trip to Carmel, California.

He hasn’t crashed his ex-wife’s Christmas Day plans, even though she lives only three miles away from his home in suburban Virginia.

“We try not to mess with the schedule when we don’t have to because it’s easier on both parties,” said Murphy. “As each party has moved on, it happened to work that way. We try not to interfere with each other.”

Dear To Her Credit,

My husband and I lived in California, which is a community property state, for 15 years. He had a lot more debt than I did, and most of it was in his name only.

Recently, we moved to Oregon, which is not a community property state. We’re now getting a divorce, and I’m trying to get all his debts assigned to him. I’ve heard, however, that by community property laws, I could still be liable for his debts even after the divorce and even if my name is not on the accounts. Is that true even if we get a divorce in a noncommunity property state?

- Trudy

Dear Trudy,

You’re right to be worried about post-divorce debt. Many ex-spouses think everything is taken care of when a divorce decree assigns debt to one spouse. Then the other ex gets a rude surprise when the creditors come calling!

Actor Joel Moore – who played scientist Norm Spellman in “Avatar” — has filed for divorce. Moore and his wife — Kineret Karen Ben Yishay Moore married on New Year’s Day in 2009 and separated this June. This should be a relatively short lived divorce as the couple have no children.

Television evangelist Pat Robertson has come in for some major criticism following his recent remarks that a man whose wife was far “gone” with Alzheimer’s should divorce her if he wanted a new companion.

On his television program, “The 700 Club, Mr. Robertson took a call from a man asking how he should advise a friend whose wife was deep into dementia and no longer recognized him.

“His wife as he knows her is gone,” the caller said, and the friend is “bitter at God for allowing his wife to be in that condition, and now he’s started seeing another woman.”

“This is a terribly hard thing,” Mr. Robertson said, clearly struggling to think his way through a wrenching situation. “I hate Alzheimer’s. It is one of the most awful things, because here’s the loved one — this is the woman or man that you have loved for 20, 30, 40 years, and suddenly that person is gone.”

In the wake of this news, they have been seen out together frolicking in the sun as though there isn’t trouble in paradise.

Needless to say they have fervently been denying the rumors.

This denial all but assures that they will breakup however, if recent evidence is to be believed.

The Huffington Post has complied a list of seven recent celebrity splits that started with the inevitable denial.
