A Malaysian businessman’s gift of a white Ferrari to former celebrity couple reality star Kim Kardashian and basketball player Kris Humphries for their wedding is set to steal the limelight in their divorce proceedings.

Britain’s Daily Mail reported that the 27-year-old NBA player wanted his wife to tell the truth regarding the US$325,000 (RM975,000) car.

Humphries wants to know what happened to the luxury car given to them by a “wealthy Malaysian businessman” who had reportedly attended their wedding, among other things.

However, a representative of Kardashian told a website that she had bought the car herself.

Her lawyer Laura Wesser accused Humphries of seeking publicity by trying to prolong the proceedings to dissolve the 72-day marriage.

The couple separated last October and the 31-year-old Kardashian has a new boyfriend in musician Kanye West.

The spat came up after Kardashian recently announced that she was donating US$200,000 (RM600,000) to charity to cover “double the value” of their wedding gifts.

Feminists like to point to statistics that supposedly show that divorced women experience a fall in their standard of living as proof that wives are reluctantly initiating divorces to get out of marriages to ill-behaving husbands. There are two problems with this highly misleading statistic (assuming the stat is true in the sense it is being used):

1. The presumption that women are thinking through the long-term and less tangible financial consequences of divorce when the short-term and more tangible incentives are all in the woman’s favor.

A woman who knows she will get half, the house, and custody with child support thinks she will hit the jackpot in the event of divorce, because those rewards are immediate and tangible. She won’t be as likely to think through the prospect of diminished career potential or sexual market value. Incentives matter in human behavior, and front-loaded incentives matter more than downstream disincentives.

The Peshawar High Court has directed a Russian woman, implicated in a theft case by her estranged Pakistani husband, to approach the Russian embassy in Islamabad in order to return to her country.

Christina Petrochinkova, who was renamed Parveen after she embraced Islam, married Charsadda resident Ikramullah in Thailand in 2005. On April 13, 2005, Ikramullah brought Parveen to Pakistan and she obtained Pakistani nationality.

According to Parveen’s lawyer, the couple drifted apart due to domestic disputes and Parveen filed for divorce in a family court in Charsadda. Ikramullah then accused Parveen of stealing Rs1.2 million in cash and 360 grams of gold. He also had an FIR registered against her. Parveen approached the PHC for a pre-arrest bail and requested that an identity card be issued to her as her card had expired. The court granted her bail before arrest.

This weekend’s event at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea won’t feature wedding-dress designs, sample bouquets or cakes. Instead, attendees can expect panels and seminars with such titles as “Moving on After Infidelity,” “Into the Fog—Becoming a Single Dad and a Single Dude Again” and “Parenting Through Divorce.”

The founders of what is believed to be the region’s first comprehensive divorce expo hope it will become an annual event, and something they can eventually take on the road.

“Divorce is so hard and overwhelming because it touches on every aspect of your life,” said Nicole Baras Feuer, a divorce mediator and divorcee, who organized the event with her mother, also a mediator.
