Madonna’s ‘MDNA’ airs divorce venom
Divorce has long been a juicy topic in popular music.
The late country star Tammy Wynette spelled it out to spare a little boy’s tender ears: “D-I-V-O-R-C-E.” But Madonna’s new album, “MDNA” — available in standard and explicit versions — doesn’t hide the nasty details. In “Don’t Give A,” she spits out the words “Lawyers / Suck it up / Didn’t have a prenup” with a venomous snarl.
The tribulations of the Material Girl’s former marriage to Guy Ritchie surface in nearly half the album’s 17 songs. “Would you have married me if I were poor?” she pleads in “Love Spent,” a bruising song that merges bluegrass with jagged electro-pop. Another, much harsher song, “Gang Bang,” is a revenge fantasy in which a woman guns down a bad-guy lover.
