Divorce Causes Tension Between Muslims and Coptic Orthodox Christians

In Egypt, divorce is causing tensions to rise between the Muslims and the Christians. The problem is that Islam is tolerant of divorce while the Coptic Orthodox Christian Church is not. Because of this, many Coptic women are converting to Islam to leave their marriages.

Within the Coptic Orthodox Church divorces are only allowed for two reasons which are adultery or religious conversion. Although divorce is allowed on those ground there are still consequences. The adulterer can never marry within the church again and a person who converts can never reenter the Christian faith. This causes many couples in unhappy marriages to feel trapped.

Divorce on the grounds of conversion to Islam is very detrimental to a Christian family. It tends to lead to many more issues.
