Former Rebel Prisoner Granted Divorce from Husband in Colombia

BOGOTA, Colombia — A judge in Colombia has dissolved the marriage of Ingrid Betancourt, the former presidential candidate rescued in 2008 from leftist rebels who held her hostage for more than six years.

Betancourt filed for divorce after her rescue. Her now ex-husband, Juan Carlos Lecompte, originally refused to agree to the split with the woman he married in 1997.

The 53-year-old Lecompte demanded a share of royalties from Betancourt’s book, “Even Silence Has An End.”
