Girl Scouts’ 100th Anniversary: Founder Juliette Gordon Low’s Surprising Divorce History
One hundred years ago today, Girl Scouts of the USA was founded by Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low of Savannah, Ga. In a new biography published last month, “Juliette Gordon Low: The Remarkable Founder of the Girl Scouts,” historian Stacy Cordery considers how Low’s unhappy marriage and desire for divorce may have contributed to her founding the Girl Scouts.
When Low created the Girl Scouts organization in 1912, her purpose was “to train girls to take their rightful places in life, first as good women, then as good citizens, wives, and mothers.”
Low’s own journey as a wife began on December 21, 1886, when the 26-year-old debuntante married William Mackay Low, an English aristocrat. After tying the knot, the pair moved to England, with Low splitting her time between Savannah and the British Isles.
