Memphis Woman Almost Divorced Without Knowledge

If police sergeant Norman Benjamin had not been nearly killed in a shooting, his wife would never have known that he had filed for an uncontested divorce. He claimed that he did not know her whereabouts when he filed for the divorce on May 19th.

Even as she confronted him with information about the divorce, Mr. Benjamin stilled denied it. When he finally did confess, he said that “he did not mean to do so.”

A woman named Martha Mote was originally accused of shooting Mr. Benjamin. When all charges were eventually dropped against her she confessed that she had seen Mr. Benjamin shoot himself after being denied a relationship with Ms. Mote’s niece and after contemplating his financial issues.

Since the trial Mr. Benjamin has returned home to an awkward situation as his wife files for a divorce of her own.
