More Monogamy Today?

There is evidence that shows that Generation X is leaning more towards monogamy than divorce when compared to their parents. The number of divorces reached its height in 1980, but has been in decline ever since.

What is the reason behind it? Experts say that some reasons include higher levels of education, “peer” marriages where both parents split responsibilities evenly, and a desire to stay together for the sake of their children.

Author Iris Krasnow has been interviewing 200 couples who had been married from 15 to 70 years to figure out how to make marriage last. She learned, “The happiest marriages are the ones where both partners have their own life, their own income, their own interests.” She added, “The unhappiest marriages are the ones where someone is swallowed by the other.”

She encourages couples to think as a team, to lower their expectations of having a perfect marriage, and to be engaged in activities and relationships outside of the marriage.
