Newspaper Incorrectly Reports NY Same Sex Divorce Case as “Historic” – Our Law Office Has Handled Many Same Sex Divorce Cases Prior to This Case

new york same sex divorceIf you are in a same sex marriage and are living in New York, although you’re not allowed to get married in NY you’re allowed to get divorce.  Interesting, no?

Although a recent story published by the Watertown Times claims that the first divorce of a same sex couple took place in Jefferson County this past December, The Law Office of David Centeno, PLLC has been helping same sex couples get divorced long before then.

The couple were legally married outside of New York.  A recent article in the Watertown Times covered this divorce case.

The Judge that made this divorce case final chose not to discuss the entire details of his rulings. However, the article does state “Judge Gilbert declined to discuss his ruling, although a source said he initially intended to tell the men they must get divorced where they were married. However, he made his decision based on a state Appellate Division, Fourth Department, ruling rendered in February 2008 that gave recognition to marriage between two women who were wed in Ontario, where same-sex marriages are legal.”

Although we are happy this is getting press so more people in same sex marriages know that they can get divorced and be free, it’s certainly not a historic case.  Our firm has handled numerous same sex divorces in NY prior to December 2010.
