High-Stakes Divorce Complicates Baseball TV Deal

Talk about making business complicated! Former Los Angeles Dodges owner Frank McCourt has complained that the move by Commissioner Bud Selig to take over the Dodgers may make them unable to make payroll on May 31st. At stake is the potential deal with Fox Sports for a 3 billion dollar deal over the next 17 years.

“McCourt, who’s in the middle of a highly publicized divorce, has complained publicly that his financial difficulties would be solved if Selig would approve a $3 billion, 17-year TV contract with Fox that includes a front-loaded payment of about $300 million. McCourt and his representatives have publicly attacked Selig and MLB for taking control of the Dodgers last month and for refusing, so far, to approve the club’s proposed $3 billion, 17-year TV deal with Fox. That deal would give the cash-strapped Dodgers an upfront payment of $300 million. Without a cash infusion, the club may not make payroll May 31.”
