Why Newt Gringrich Really Divorced His First Wife

An aid of Newt Gringrich has claimed that the reason Gringrich divorced his first wife, Jackie Battley, was because he didn’t think she was pretty enough to be first lady.

CNN reported that the aid claimed Gringrich said his wife was not “young or pretty” enough to be first lady.

Gringrich had previously claimed that the divorce was mutual, even going so far as to say his wife asked him to file for divorce.  Court records however show that Gringrich’s wife did not want the divorce as he had claimed.

When the couple married in 1962, Battley was seven years older than Gringrich. The couple divorced 18 years later.  The couple had two daughters together.

During the divorce, Gringrich began dating his second wife, Marianne Ginther.
