New Study Says Stay-at-Home Dads Are More Likely to Divorce

A study published recently in the American Journal of Sociology shows that unemployment can predict divorce in men.

The study found that unemployed men were more likely to be left by their wives and chose to begin divorce proceedings, even if satisfied with their relationships. Though women unhappy with their marriages were more likely to divorce if they were employed than unemployed, their employment status did not affect the likelihood of their spouse beginning proceedings.

The findings reveal that social pressures for men to be the breadwinners still exist. Liana Sayer, lead author of the study, explains “For men, not having a job increases the risk that he will initiate the relationship, and it also increases the risk women will leave the relationship.” She states, “It’s still unacceptable for men to stay at home and take care of the kids.”
