A Decline in Divorce Rate?

Data detailing the ages of couples may explain recent drops in the divorce rate. According to recent Census data, the average age of newlyweds has been higher: in 1950, the average age of men entering their first marriage was 23 and was 20 for women. Those numbers were 28 and 26, respectively, in 2010. Recent census data also maintains that the “seven-year itch,” or average age of marriage that ends in divorce, still remains.

Stephen Willis, a marriage counselor, says this may have something to do with today’s divorce rate being lower than that of the past. “Research has shown that the more educated you are,” he explains, “the less likely you are to get divorced.” He added, “From 21 to 30, the chances of marriage being successful increase with each year. After 31, it tends to level out.”
