New York No Fault Divorce is Almost Here!

Good news for those of you eagerly awaiting the result of what will happen regarding New York no fault divorce. Governor David Paterson has voiced his support for the no fault divorce bill and has declared that he intends to sign it into law.

As you probably know, right now, New York is the only state in the nation that does not permit no fault divorce.  You can’t get divorced because you don’t want to be in your marriage.  New York law currently requires that you plead and prove fault grounds such as abandonment or adultery in order to get divorced.

The no fault divorce law will change this.  Soon, if your marriage is irretrievably broken, you won’t have to remain in a failed marriage.

The bill currently sits on the desk of Governor Paterson.  It was delivered to him by the NYS Legislature ten days ago.  If he does not sign it into law or veto it by this Saturday, August 14, 2010 it will automatically become law.

The no fault divorce law will take effect sixty days from when Governor Paterson signs it or Saturday (depending on whether he signs it or it defaults into law).
