Joe Cioffi, 59, is one of the many fathers trying to win primary custody of his son. “Why should I be the underdog here?” He explained his right to more than just visitation rights, “I’m a professional. I pay my bills. I’m not a criminal. I’m home at night.”
According to the 2010 Census, there has been a 27.3% increase in the number of American families led by single dads. Margaret Brinig, a family law professor at the University of Notre Dame, highlighted the importance of the jump. “If the dad is really interested in getting custody and wants to have a relationship with his kids,” she stated, “he is far more successful than he was 20 years ago.”
