Why the Real Estate Recession is Halting Divorces

The recession has had effects on everything; from obesity to fashion. One particular study indicates “the recession has made for estranged bedfellows of couples who would get divorced if it wasn’t for the decline in their home’s value.” Almost 40% of couples that were planning on filing for a divorce reconsidered after the recession began.

Virginia sociology professor Bradford Wilcox said, “For some people, the recession led them to become more aware of the ties that bind, how spouses, parents, in-laws and kids stick with you when times are rough.” People are obviously less interested in getting a divorce because they are worried about the value of their home, paying for lawyers and paying for two households.
