New York Sees 12% Rise in Divorce Filings After Adoption of No-Fault Separation

Last October, New York adopted no-fault separations which permit couples to get a divorce without declaring one spouse at fault. Since the adoption, the state has seen the number of divorce filings rise by 12%. According to court data, from October to May last year there were 33,160 divorces. This year, during the same period, there were 37,015 filings.

No-fault separation allows couples to receive a less expensive and less abrasive divorce. Now no spouse has to get the blame for the divorce, which can create for a more amicable split.

While the new law may not be the only factor in the recent increase of the number of divorce filings, it certainly eases the financial and emotional costs associated with divorce.
