Study Shows Female Breadwinners Have a Higher Rate of Divorce

A 25 year study that tracked 2,500 married couples showed that marriages where the woman earned more than the man had a 40% higher rate of divorce than those couples where the man earned more than the woman.

The study, recently reported in the Journal on Family Issues, showed that when the woman earned 60% or more of the couples’ income, the rate of divorce jumped significantly.

The study speculates that the bruised male ego may be to blame for the higher rate of divorce.  Regardless of the reason, the study documents a trend that many have predicted for some time now.  When wives earn more than their husband’s, they’re more likely to get divorced.
