Divorce bill won’t solve the problem
Admittedly, I’m a little confused this morning. That comes as little surprise to people who know me, but there’s actually a reason for my confusion today.
It all started when I began reading the “Marriage Covenant Act,” a bill proposed in the state Legislature that has taken a couple of steps toward becoming a law.
The bill, offered by a Republican lawmaker from Rainbow City near Gadsden, would require counseling and a longer waiting period before a couple in Alabama can get a divorce. It’s unclear how long a couple would be required to wait before divorcing, but one Montgomery source said it could be a year or longer.
Fortunately, the bill provides an early out as long as the spouse can prove she or he has been abused, abandoned for a year or longer or their marriage partner has been convicted of a felony or committed adultery.
Listen, I’m not making this up. It’s actually happening in Montgomery these days. You would think the state has one, maybe two, more problems that would be priorities, but it is what it is.
That’s right, from the party that gives us “government has no business telling us how to run our lives” comes a bill designed solely to tell you when you can and cannot get a divorce. We shouldn’t be shocked. Those who scream they don’t want government messing in their lives usually stand by their convictions until we start talking about someone who does business outside the mainstream.
